CASPA GPA Calculation Explained
The CASPA (Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants) calculates several distinct GPAs from your undergraduate coursework. Each GPA serves a different purpose in PA school admissions evaluation.
Quality Points = Credit Hours × Grade Point Value
CASPA GPA Categories
- Overall GPA: All undergraduate courses combined, regardless of subject.
- Science GPA: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Other Science/Math courses.
- BCP GPA: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics courses only — a focused subset of Science GPA.
- Non-Science GPA: All courses not classified as Science (English, History, Psychology, etc.).
CASPA uses a standardized grade-to-quality-point conversion scale. All repeated courses are counted fully — CASPA does not replace grades for repeated coursework.
How CASPA GPA Calculation Works
Follow these steps to understand how CASPA computes your application GPAs:
- Classify each course by subject category — Determine whether each course is Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Other Science/Math, or Non-Science.
- Convert each letter grade to quality points — Use the standard CASPA scale: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=0.7, F=0.0.
- Calculate quality points per course — Multiply credit hours by the grade's numeric value. Example: 3-credit B+ = 3 × 3.3 = 9.9 quality points.
- Sum quality points and credits by category — Group courses into Overall, Science, BCP, and Non-Science categories and total the quality points and credit hours for each.
- Divide to get each GPA — For each category, divide total quality points by total credit hours. This yields each CASPA GPA value.
CASPA GPA Calculation Examples
Example 1: Strong Science Performance
4 courses: General Biology I (A, 4cr, Biology), Gen Chem I (A-, 4cr, Chemistry), English Comp (B+, 3cr, Non-Science), Statistics (B, 3cr, Other Science)
Overall Credits: 14 → Overall GPA = 49.7/14 = 3.55
Science GPA (Bio+Chem+OtherSci): (16.0+14.8+9.0)/11 = 3.62
BCP GPA (Bio+Chem): (16.0+14.8)/8 = 3.85
Example 2: Balanced Academic Record
4 courses: Organic Chem (B, 4cr, Chemistry), Physics I (B+, 4cr, Physics), Psychology (A-, 3cr, Non-Science), Sociology (A, 3cr, Non-Science)
Overall Credits: 14 → Overall GPA = 48.3/14 = 3.45
Science GPA (Chem+Physics): (12.0+13.2)/8 = 3.15
CASPA Grade Scale & Quality Point Values
The following table shows the official CASPA grade-to-quality-point conversion used in all GPA calculations.
| Letter Grade | Quality Points | Letter Grade | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | C | 2.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | C- | 1.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B | 3.0 | D | 1.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | D- | 0.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 | F / WF | 0.0 |

CASPA GPA Glossary
Quality Points
The product of credit hours multiplied by the grade's numeric value. Used to calculate all CASPA GPAs.
Overall GPA
The GPA calculated from all undergraduate courses regardless of subject category. Total quality points divided by total credits.
Science GPA
GPA from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Other Science/Math courses. A key metric for PA school admissions.
BCP GPA
Biology-Chemistry-Physics GPA. A focused subset of Science GPA covering only these three core science disciplines.
Non-Science GPA
GPA from all courses not classified as Science, including English, History, Psychology, Sociology, and other humanities.
Other Science
CASPA category for Math, Statistics, Astronomy, Geology, Kinesiology, and similar sciences. Counts toward Science GPA only.
CASPA
Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants. The standardized application platform used by most accredited PA programs.
Grade Replacement
CASPA does NOT replace grades for repeated courses. All attempts count fully toward GPA calculations.
Editorial Review & Methodology
This CASPA GPA calculator was built and reviewed by the NumbrWiz Editorial Team. The calculation methodology is based on the official CASPA grade scale and subject category classifications published by the Physician Assistant Education Association.
- Grade scale verification: Quality point values cross-checked against the official CASPA Applicant Help Center documentation for all letter grades from A through F including plus/minus variants.
- Subject classification: Course categories align with CASPA's published subject classification system: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Other Science, and Non-Science.
- Edge case testing: Tested with single courses, all F scenarios, all A scenarios, repeated courses, and mixed category entries to ensure logical GPA outputs.
